I have failed to post any photos from “This Mama’s Week in 5 Photos” all summer long. But as I have to return to work….tear….in a week I’m trying to be in the moment with my kids and have have picked up my camera a little less. Not that I haven’t, but I want to capture their stories, but also make sure they remember I was there and I didn’t just have a camera in my hand. I think I will be sharing more of the work I do than home life in the near future. I’ll keep you posted. You can also check out a styled shoot I did here.

Elspeth Loves Photography: my baby

Okay, I’m finally doing this. I have put it off, and avoided it too long. I told a friend, who has been supporting me in this, I would share this today. It’s 9pm, I’ve put it off long enough. But I’m ready to share.

As I said in the previous post (I didn’t share on Facebook because I’m chicken) I am starting a photography business. Wow, that was hard to write! I wanted to use words like, hope, try or might start a business. But I said it, I AM starting a business. I don’t know what will come of it, but I am trusting in God’s whispers and going for it.

Today is the start of my last full month I have with my boys before I return to work. My time off has allowed me to not only soak up so much time with my boys, but I have also discovered photography. Photography has been so good for me. It’s allowed me to be the artist that I am, I feel heard through my photos, and it’s something I get to do just for me (which is hard as a mom, wife and teacher).

So meet my baby…Elspeth Loves Photography…my new business. You can visit my website to learn about the name and my vision. elspethlovesphotography.com

Here I go……2014-05-31_0016On a side note Little Glass Bluebird isn’t go anywhere. I still like to write (when I have a chance). I I hope to share my artsty adventures with you (which was the original purpose of this blog. But the Facebook page is changing for those who follow me.

I also want to credit the AWESOME photos above to my mentor Moch of Jon and Moch Photography. She did my head shots for the website and generously offered family photos too.

Photography Dreams: moving forward

Hello Dear Friends,

So last week I said I would share some photography news with you. My parents thought it was a new camera…sigh…if only. Actually, this week I will be sharing my spankin’ new business name and website. I really am hoping to build some sort of business out of this passion of min. Whether it be big or small, I just want to keep doing it, I love shooting. It gives me SO MUCH joy.

Unfortunately I have to go back to work this fall, so I thought, if I wanted to start my business, it would be smart to knock out the website before teacher mode set in. I still have some tweaking to do, so I will share the website and business name with you later this week.

One of the biggest things that’s been holding me back from trying the business thing is equipment. I love my little Nikon D3200, but it’s not a full frame. I know better photos require learning and experience, but I can see a clear difference in full frame photos. I will keep shooting til I can afford the camera.

With that said, this explains the photo below. I am trying to win the Nikon D800 (FULL FRAME!!!) throughout SnapKnot’s giveaway. I get many more entries if I share this photo with you. But it also speaks a lot of truth about how I feel about photography.

Thanks for the encouragement friends!

This Mama’s 2 Week in 10 Photos: part 25

I said I would keep up on my week’s in 5 photos, but I have a very good excuse for missing last week. I had two sick boys, not sleeping well at night or napping during the day. I didn’t have a lot of moments to write and if I did I was wiped out. But as I sit here on Monday evening watching the Bachelorette (yes, it’s a guilty pleasure. who loves the farmer?), I have time. Here is my last 2 weeks in 10 photos, enjoy:

When Benjamin was one we had to work so hard to convince him to play at the park. But when you have a big brother, like Gilbert does, we run crawl all over the place. Here is Mr. G exploring Ft. Steilacoom Park.

2014-06-23_0001.jpg Benjamin has discovered balls, soccer, basket, bouncy balls, you name it. We spent many nights in the backyard throwing balls around.
2014-06-23_0002.jpgDada makes throwing the soccer ball around, much more fun than I do. He is loved by these boys.
2014-06-23_0003.jpgThis boy cracks me up. He wants to do whatever his brother is doing.
2014-06-23_0004.jpgBenjamin has also been “climbing” our tree. If you have seen Frozen, which we’ve seen a lot of. It’s similar to Anna climbing the mountain. Benjamin thought he was so high, when he was on the top of the roots.
2014-06-23_0005.jpgLast Saturday I ran the Sound to Narrows (for the 4th time) with my old college roommates. The 3 of us stuck together since we all pushed babies out of us the last year and were sympathetic with one another if one of us needed to walk.
2014-06-23_0006.jpgFather’s Day at my parents house. Gilbert loves his Mimi. He lets very few people hold him willingly. She is one of them.
2014-06-23_0007.jpgOkay…this kid….sigh. He keeps me on my toes. He couldn’t just stand at the dishwasher, but he needed to try to get in.
2014-06-23_0008.jpgWe had a busy weekend of a wedding and birthday. Benjamin and Gilbert have a lot of girl cousins, they are everywhere. Seeing these sisters play together makes me so glad my boys are so close in age.
2014-06-23_0009.jpgThe boys were so tired they slept past the start of church. So we went to the beach for a little picnic. Gilbert has moved on from tackling his big brother to tackling his Dada. What’s next?!
2014-06-23_0010.jpgThat’s my last two weeks for ya! I hope to be sharing some interesting photography news with you soon. Stay tuned!

This Slacker Mama’s 3 Weeks in 16 Photos: part 24

Hello Stranger! Yes, it has been a looooong time since I’ve posted my week in 5 photos. I’m sure you all have been wondering where I’ve been (Mom and Anne). I will be straight with you. I went to my first photography workshop 3 weeks ago. It was fantastic, and I hope to write more about that soon. I had a wonderful time, I learned so much and I met a lot of great photographers/people. However when you meet people who do what you do it’s hard not to compare. So I went into hiding and fearing posting anything, thinking my photos just don’t cut it.

But, after talking to some really encouraging people this last week and watching Brene Brown’s TED talk about vulnerability (highly recommend it), I am back. Even if my photos are not up to par or I feel insecure about them I am going to allow myself to vulnerable and share my photos again. Good things can come from allowing yourself to be vulnerable (like meeting my dear husband). So here is my past 3 weeks…

I think we have a musician on our hands, no joke. He is constantly singing and loves guitars. This was our $12 goodwill find. Thank goodness we found a smaller toy guitar at our neighbor’s garage sale. The big one was scratching our floors.

This was not the greatest lighting, but for moments like these, lighting does not matter.

So….I guess boys like to wrestle. I don’t get it, it gives me a bit of a heart attack. But it can also be very cute.

The next 3 photos are of Gilbert on his first birthday. I think they capture the little personality coming out of him at one year old.  My silly boy.

My dare devil. This child always has some sort of injury on his body.

My sweet, happy boy. His smile kills me.

Summer is almost  here and there have been lots of trips to the park. You always need a Target sticker and a baby at the park. Again…my boys’ smiles kill me.

We celebrated my friend Annie and her soon arriving baby last weekend. I love dessert shots (fewer calories).

Another shot from the baby shower. These are the beautiful women from our community group, going on 5 years (I think).

We found Benjamin’s sunglasses we lost last summer. They then had to be passed around.

My niece had her 3rd birthday last week. Can you guess the theme? My sister made it look so sweet. She made the cake toppers herself.

Yes, another “blowing out the candles” photo….I can’t resist.

Gilbert did not care for the cake at his birthday, but he cannot get enough ice cream. His eyes seem to be saying, “back off.”

In another year, these cousins could be double trouble. And I’m afraid my child will be the leader.

GIlbert got this car from my parents for his birthday. He loooooves it. So does his brother…..

That’s my 3 weeks. I didn’t share any photos from Gilbert’s birthday party, I will do that in a separate post. Hope to see you soon!

The Tired Mama’s 2 Weeks in 7 Photos: part 23

Happy Mother’s Day to All!

I haven’t done a post for awhile and I wasn’t going to this week either, but with a kind nudge from my cousin and an encouraging Mother’s Day gift from my husband I decided you would get 7 photos from the last two weeks. I feel like I’ve hit a brick wall with photography. Every time I turn around I feel discouraged. So instead of let the discouragement bring me down I will share the few pictures I’ve had the energy to take. Pictures have also been minimal because my boys are H-A-R-D. Gilbert is into everything and Benjamin is so impulsive. I’m learning with boys there is a lot of destructive energy in my house.

Here is my week:

Benjamin needs to have a dandelion in his hand whenever he is outside. It serves as his microphone while he walks around singing “Let it Co (Go)” and his own made up music. This particular dandelion ended up getting eaten….oy!

My sweet nephew James turned one last week. Thanks goodness for big sisters to help out.

Benjamin suddenly has a new interest in the rocking horse that has been in his room for the past year. He calls it Cinnamon, the name of the pony he rode at the fair. He also reenacts the horse scenes from Frozen, saying “Frozen does that.”

My sister’s birthday this weekend. There are those helpful girls again, helping their Dad artistically arrange the candles to look like a castle.

I don’t know what it is but I loooove pictures of people blowing out their candles.

This little guy is such a dare devil. I’m afraid he may be my ER kid. That egg on his head is the result of two separate head bonks. Earlier this week he was standing Benjamin’s two garage and town, with a foot on each one so he could stand next to his brother. This kid has no fears.

We went down to Ruston Way for a Mother’s Day picnic. It was this photo that made me decide I should write a post for the week. I’m no longer the mother of babies, but now also the mother of a little boy.

This Mama’s Week in 5 Photos: part 22

Hmmmm….I’m not sure what to say about this week. Many ups and downs, I didn’t really even pick up my camera until the rental camera arrived. The photos are all from this weekend. Here is my week:

This little man is 11 months! Wow!

This is how they feel about Frozen. I may have influenced it a bit. Don’t worry, I didn’t let Gilbert continue to watch.

The beautiful dogwood that bloomed in our front yard this week.

This is Benjamin, the escape artist. He loves to sneak out into the front yard. This was an allowed sneak out.

Benjamin’s buddy, Jacob, has his birthday party this weekend. I could not get either one of them to look at me. Jacob was really into his new toy and Benjamin sees me with a camera enough.

Sunshine this week!

Nicole & David: Seattle Maternity Photographer

I had my very first photo shoot in Seattle this weekend. My friend Nicole and her husband David were coming up from Oregon for a birthday and so we arranged to do maternity pictures the same day. They were so great to let me do this. I even rented a camera I am (maybe) hoping to buy in the future. I often find myself drooling over other photographer’s work and I couldn’t figure why my picture quality didn’t look as crisp as theirs. Then I discovered they were using full frame cameras. So, I have made it my mission, via craiglist selling, to earn enough money to buy a full frame camera. I thought I would try a few different models/brands out. So we rented the Nikon D610. It makes such a difference in the photos, but I want to try the D700 and the Canon 5D Mark iii before making any decisions.

Anyway that was a long tangent. Here is Nicole and David (and their sweet baby girl). We did the photo shoot down by the pier in Seattle, since that’s where they had their first date. They were very fun to shoot.

This Mama’s Easter in 5 Photos (+ one): special edition

I barely took a single picture all week, so I thought I would write a post from our Easter since they’re are more than enough pictures.  We had a pretty nice Easter, but I think Benjamin could have gone without any chocolate. Here is our Easter:

Since I was very pregnant last Easter we didn’t color eggs with Benjamin, so this was his first time dying eggs. He loved it, but by the end one of his hands look like the wicked witch of the west.

We celebrate Easter on Saturday with my family, which made for a rainy Easter egg hunt. I think if you took off their raincoats and boots they would look like a J Crew ad. Perla has the serious model face and Benjamin has that aloof cool dude face.

Benjamin and Perla climbed in my parents bed before we left. They were so funny to watch, tickling, snuggling and tackling each other.

Every Easter our church does a flowering of the cross. It’s a great reminder of new life.

Easter egg hunt number 2. Gilbert was his only competition, so he made away like a bandit.

Benjamin got this wagon for his first birthday. We finally used it today on a walk around the neighborhood. This is the only photo Gilbert made it in, he’s been a grumpy teether with a cold this weekend.

That’s our Easter.

He is Risen! He is Risen Indeed!

This Mama’s Week in 8 Photos: part 21

That’s right…8 photos. I’ve reached the 20 mark for these posts, so I think it’s okay to break the routine. Plus, I couldn’t resist sharing all 8. My week was same old, same old. I have a baby on the move and a 2 year old in need of my attention then I can’t always give him. But we had some good moments in between. Here is our week:

Benjamin went to daycare one day this week. So it was just me and this little guy. I think he was surprised he was getting so much attention. He talked more and moved less (there was no one to chase).

Benjamin didn’t nap at daycare. He crashed that night.

We went to been the spring fair. Benjamin had been talking about riding horses since he saw the senior pictures I took with the horse. So, when we saw the opportunity to ride a pony we couldn’t pass it up. He had this face most of the time, but he loved it. I was so proud of how brave he was.

We don’t usually feed our kid cheeseburgers, but we learned last week that he liked him, so we tried again. He ate 3 bites and the the bun.

A beautiful Sunday evening at the waterfront. I love these boys.

Monday, today, was also beautiful and my sister is on spring break, so we went to Owen’s Beach. The waterfront is much more fun with cousins. Let’s just say he didn’t want to leave.
